Do you know us?

SPZ

We are a very old Catholic church, located in the historic centre of Saragossa [Zaragoza]. Read on to find out a little more about us.

We were born in 1118

The origin of the Parish Church of Saint Paul [San Pablo] was a chapel dedicated to Saint Blaise built in 1118, which was promoted to Parish and changed its name in 1259. Shortly afterwards the chapel was demolished to clear the way for a larger temple, that was built in Gothic-Mudéjar* style. Some subsequent extensions, made from the 14th to the 18th century, completed the great building that has remained to the present day.

*Mudéjar: style combining elements of Islamic art with those of Christian art.

Firm in the faith

Mass is celebrated daily in our church. If you wish to meditate in silence, we also have some time for personal prayer every day. On the other hand, popular religiosity has a strong presence among us –for example, devotions as old as the one still given to St Blaise, as well as the processions at Holy Week and at other times of the year.

An outstanding cultural site

Being a very significant monument of Mudéjar architecture, the complex that makes up the Tower and Parish Church of San Pablo is inscribed by UNESCO on the World Heritage List. The numerous works of art (specially Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque) that houses the building also make of it a magnificent setting for the concerts and musical cycles that are held.
